CHAPTER 8

Within the new game room they’ve just entered, the group surveys their new surroundings to find themselves in a roller skating rink with rails and a giant banked curve marked with flame-shaped markers on the top and ending with a jump ramp.  Surrounding the arena is a city washed in neon lights and set in a neon purple night sky with a full moon and stars about – something that would be perfect for a music videos of this decade, no?
“Ah, rollerderby.  Let me guess – of the competitive, brawling style?” Sam asks amusedly as he starts walking around – only to trip on the floor upon trying to do so.  “Wha . . .” he adds in before getting up and looking down at his shoes – which has rollerblade wheels suddenly attached to the soles.
The others notice this and look down at their own footwear to see the same happening to it, too.  “Well, it makes sense.  But what about protective knee and head gear?” David points out before hearing the moonlings snickering.  “Oh wait – we can’t get hurt in this ship.  Dummy,” he mumbles annoyingly before face-palming.  “All right, if the real-life rules of roller derby fighting applies here, then there’s no need to explain anything, right?”
“Yep,” Arizona replies simply.  “So who wants to play fight?  One on one, with a team of em’ moon cuties each as helpers.”
David looks around to see his fellow Techno Angel/Knight brethren backing up in a slow, nervous fashion with sweat showers flying from their heads.  He rolls his eyes annoyingly and then says, “Someone has to be the nominal sacrifice.  I’ll go.”
“I might as well be your opponent, too.  In that case . . .” Arizona replies before whistling out loud.
Just like that, four Knightmasks and three Symphivoices show up out of the blue in cartoonish clouds of smoke.  The knightly raccoons head over to Onyx Knight’s side while the hippie fireflies – as well as Celes – do the same to Angelic Emerald.  “Do y’all need to know what to do, just to refresh your memory?” she asks the moonlings.
“Beat and pummel the other team while racing around in laps – not very sophisticated nor complicated,” one of the Knightmasks replies before yawning in a casual, lazy tone.  “Only you and Dave can score points for each other’s teams, though, we’re just helping.”
Arizona nods affirmatively before skating over to the startling line with her helpers, with David and his own following suit.  “All right, are you all ready?” she asks the contestants, who all nod affirmatively.  “3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . GO!”
With that, the rollerbladers start skating around the rink fast and furiously.  One of the Knightmasks take Onyx Knight’s hand and sends him speeding forward toward Angelic Emerald, who’s skating ahead with the Symphivoices.  Once the two jetters are head-to-head, they come across the aforementioned banked curve and skate up it between the flame markers as carefully as they can.  Upon doing this successfully, they then skate up the incoming ramp and jump back down on the rink in a bada** manner.
Upon reuniting with their moonling helpers, David and Arizona commence the battle by throwing all sorts of Double Dragon-esque attacks on each other – flying punches, elbow punch, kicks, drop kicks, back kicks, and more – as the moonlings follow suit.  Each member get thrown/floored by the sideline after getting their share of knuckle and foot sandwiches – only to skate back into the fray a few seconds later, good as new and ready for more.
Despite the Knightmasks being larger and wearing armor, the Symphivoices are more experienced with martial arts and quicker to unload their attacks on the raccoon punching bags.  All of this is going on as they skate backward and forward at the same time, which is quite impressive – then again, this IS a virtual simulation of an arcade game.
Regarding the Techno humanoids, they’re still busy pummeling each other, alternatively blocking to avoid flooring each other.  “Y’know, if we keep this up, this round will end in a draw,” Onyx Knight points out annoyingly.
“You’re right about that.  You know you can throw your opponents away for a quick point, right?” Angelic Emerald snickers amusedly.
“Wha-?!” David asks in surprise – just as Arizona grabs him by the waist and throws her hapless rival over her shoulder.
The angelic cowgirl looks over to see the hapless knight roll on by along with his comrades, who the Symphivoices have just temporality pummeled to oblivion.  Seconds later, the guys return good as new and skate over to their oblivious rivals, throwing them aside for points.
Arizona and the Symphivoices return just as quickly and return the favor by spin-kicking their rivals from behind, sending them smacking on the rink just like that.
It takes David and the Knightmasks not long to return into the fray, resuming another punch-and-kick conversation with the hippie fireflies and their cowgirl leader.  Once Arizona and the Symphivoices pummel them away for good and throw them aside for good, a ringing bell is heard – signifying the obvious.  When Onyx Knight returns to play, he and Angelic Emerald stop skating and wait to hear the results.
Serena flies down before the jetters and shows them a tally card of the total points earned for each team – Arizona’s, 15 – David’s, 10.  “It was quite an intense match, I’ll give you that.”
“Well, we went easy on them,” Onyx Knight points out while crossing his arms.  “You know how reluctant knights are when it comes to fighting women.”
“I’ll give you some points for respect,” Angelic Emerald smirks amusedly while tugging her rival’s cheek playfully.  “Who wants to play next?”
“Shall I play?” Arthur’s voice calls out from out of the blue.  This gets Arizona’s surprise as she looks over to see the new Techno Knight on the block - masked and visible to their humanoid brethren with his eyeholes glowing neon blue.
“Whoa, another Techno Knight?  Who are you?” Sam asks in surprise as he skates over to the knight in blue-tinted hawk-shaped armor.
“Call me Sapphire Knight – for now,” Arthur replies simply while crossing his arms.  “I would like to participate in this game you created, Angelic Emerald.”
“Oh, uh, of course!” Arizona replies nervously with sweat showers flying from her head.
“I’d like to see how good of a fighter/rollerblader you are.  Consider me your rival,” Emerald Knight replies amusedly while crossing his arms.
With that, Angelic Emerald whistles out loud for the moonling helpers to show up and join their leaders – the Graphic Artnavals for Sapphire Knight, and the Holobats for his Emerald counterpart.  They all skate over to the starting line and wait for Arizona to start things off.  “On your mark . . . get set . . . GO!” she calls out cheerfully.
With that, the new teams skate off with sheer vigor and excitement.  The jetters are the first to reach the banked curve and start skating on it along the flame markers – with Sam slipping off much to his chagrin.  Upon reaching the ramp, the guys jump off and land back on the rink – with Emerald Knight crash-landing and rolling on the sideline while his Sapphire counterpart continues skating onward.
Not pleased with this humiliating situation, the Holobats skate over to their fine-feathered rivals to trap them like bread to any sandwich filling you prefer and start pummeling them front and back, sending them rolling to the sidelines like today’s garbage.  Emerald Knight rejoins the battle seconds later and heads over to his mysterious rival (to him, anyway), uppercutting any thunderbirds out of his path.
Just then, some of the Graphic Artnavals show up in an attempt to ‘sandwich’ Sam for a quick ‘n’ easy pummeling.  As for Arthur, he’s being jump-kicked repeatedly by surrounding Holobats still out for payback.  While his neon green rival punches his way out, he winds eating rink as everyone skates on past.
Naturally, Sapphire Knight returns seconds later, eager to deliver some payback.  When he sees his emerald counterpart throwing his thunderbird helpers over his shoulder like trash bags, he skates over quietly and gracefully like an actual hawk and throws a drop kick from behind, flooring him on the spot.
The Graphic Artnavals give a thumbs-up to their leader, who returns the gesture.  One of them then grabs their jetter and throws him forward as he enters a jump kick stance to floor all Holobats in his path.  By the time Sam returns to the fray, he’s kicking all thunderbirds in his way toward his blue-tinted armored rival unbeknownst to him.  It isn’t until Arthur receives an over-the-shoulder throw from his neon green rival is he aware of his rival’s return.
Just then, the bell rings again with both jetters and their helpers stop what they’re doing.  Just like before, Serena flies down before the rivals with her tally card to show them the results – Arthur’s team, 30 – Sam’s, 29. “Much more intense than I expected.  Whoever you are, Sapphire, you’re quite the rollerbrawler,” she says to Sapphire Knight himself.
“I’m quite the experienced one, if you wish to know considering my identity,” the hawk-shaped knight replies pleasantly.  “I know Sam and David are, too.”
“Well, that leaves me and Mackenzie as the only ones who haven’t played this game – nor do we wish to,” Angelic Silver replies nervously.
“Aww, but WE want to,” says Trixie from out of the blue as she and her fellow Pixicats walk onto the scene.
“Same here,” Lumimaria adds in as she and her Piximask brethren follow suit from the opposite side.
“Don’t worry, sugah cubes, we’re willing to swap partners temporarily,” Arizona assures while gently patting Trixie’s head.
“Same here,” Arthur adds in.  “Choose your jetter and we’ll commence for one last match.”
With that, the Piximask team runs over to Angelic Emerald while the Pixicats follow suit to Sapphire Knight’s.  “We’re fans of the underdogs-newbies-rookies-and the like,” Trixie points out cheerfully.
“That’s nice of ya,” Arizona says pleasantly as both teams skate over to the starting line.  “All right, you know the drill, people.  On the count of three . . . THREE!” she announces as she and her team skates off ahead of their rivals.
“Well, that was sportsman-like,” Trixie says sarcastically as she and her own team skate off to commence the battle.
Upon reaching the angelic cowgirl and the Piximasks, the hawk-shaped knight and the Pixicats brawl it out Double Dragon-style with jump kicks and over-the-shoulders throws all around.  Those thrown at the sidelines quickly skate back into the fray and start throwing their rivals forward into the waiting fists of their comrades.  Upon receiving uppercuts at their faces, they roll along the sideline before respawning seconds later.
Just then, Arizona and Arthur arrive at the banked curve and skate right up to the flame-linen path like graceful swans.  Upon arriving at the ramp, they jump off and somersault right back to the rink.  As expected, their helpers are waiting from them and they start brawling away with their opposites, leading a trail of dazed, star-spangled moonlings in their wake.  Once they’re the last ones remaining, Sapphire Knight grabs Angelic Emerald by the feet and spins her around before throwing her aside so she can join her moonling partners.
Upon respawning onto the fray, the Piximasks and Pixicats gun for their opposite jetters and start punching and kicking them before they know what’s coming.  Focused on her rivals now, Arizona grabs one of the Pixicats and uses her as a baseball bat to knock her brethren away like baseballs before throwing her out as well.  Arthur takes this moment to his advantage as he spin-kicks the Piximasks out of his path toward his temporary rival – but the sentient computer mice returns seconds later to impede his progress.  He then starts spin-kicking around like a top, knocking the unsuspecting Piximice back to the cleaners.
Upon seeing this from behind, Arizona smirks annoyingly and starts doing the tornado kick herself while clobbering her rivals into the wind.  But Arthur is aware of this and spins away from his incoming rival while knocking more Piximasks heading his way – not knowing one of them grabs him by the waist and throws him over her shoulder, ending his dervish of destruction just like that.
Once Sapphire Knight respawns from his defeat, the bell rings once more and both jetters stop skating on a dime.  Cue Serena with the tally card to reveal the results – Arizona’s team has 45 points, while Arthur’s has 45 – yep, a draw.  “Since it’s a tie, it’s time for a one to one brawl to break it.  Are you two ready?”
“Of course!” Angelic Emerald insists while cracking his knuckles, with Sapphire Knight nodding affirmatively without saying a word.
“Then get ready,” Angelic Silver replies as both jetters face each other in battle poses.  “3 . . . 2 . . . 1 . . . FIGHT!”
With that, both jetters put up their dukes as they approach each other.  Arizona performs a spin kick at Arthur’s stomach, while the hawk-shaped knight throws a right hook to counter – only for the angelic cowgirl to jump away just in time.  He then approaches to try again, only for Angelic Emerald to throw another spin kick at his gut and then launches a left hook to follow up – but that last one misses.  Sapphire Knight approaches to get a blow in, but Angelic Emerald gets two more spin kicks in.  Arthur jumps away and then comes back in with a right hook, which connects at Arizona’s face.  He then throws a spin kick at her stomach, only for the angelic cowgirl to return the favor twice fold.  Sapphire Knight jumps away and then returns for a counterattack, only for Angelic Emerald to land a left hook and uppercut in succession – flooring her boyfriend just like that.
With that, Serena whistles out loud and cries out, “Angelic Emerald is the WINNER!”
“Yeah!” Arizona cries out as she raises a fist upwards in triumph.
“Ugh . . .” Arthur mumbles as he gets back up.  “You brawl well.  You have earned my respect, Angelic Emerald,” he says humbly before shaking hands with his cowgirl rival.
“Same here, sugah cube,” Arizona replies cheerfully before giving Sapphire Knight a surprise smooch on the lips.
Arthur is so surprised by this that his blushing glows through his mask in a faint neon pink glow.  “Well, this has been a good game, everyone.  I bid you all goodbye for now,” he announces in a calm, mysterious tone before disappearing in a burst of blue rose petals.
“Well, that was unexpected,” Emerald Knight says as he watches the rose petals fly away in the artificial wind – y’know, for dramatic theatrics?  “Do you know him, sis?”
“Yes, recently.  I won’t tell his secrets though,” Arizona points out with a mischievous smirk.
“Considering the moonlings have accepted him, he must be a good guy regardless.  I’m still curious about his identity, though . . .” Serena replies while pondering about that topic.
“Hey!” David pouts in a jealous tone, while his angelic fiancé snickers playfully.
“Only kidding, my love,” Angelic Silver replies assuredly before embracing her true love.  “By the way, Ari – regarding your new game, it’ll become a popular way to vent out negative emotions.”
“True, but at least here no one gets hurt for real,” Arizona replies while resting her hands on her head.  “Thanks for participating, everyone.”
And with that, Angelic Emerald leaves the game room for obvious reasons as the others stay and chat about Sapphire Knight, chuckling quietly behind her back.
Here's chapter 9 now.  Hope you all like it :)
